The dogs are all extroverts
You can hear them across the yards
beyond houses down the long blocks
off 16th and 23rd, barking their fool heads off.
It must be important,
but then I’ve never heard a casual syllable
uttered with the gutteral knucklebone voice of a dog.
They’re 100%, all the time,
and it makes me love them more
because you know, I know they’ve
perfected it, that thing I seek,
they’ve got it down, those slobbery fuckers,
leg-humpers, dream-whiners, water-sloppers
kibble-scarfing crotch-sniffing drool-mongers,
whom I love even when they keep me up at night
as long as I can curse a bit first,
grumble in the morning with a scratch or two
behind those floppy uncut ears
the color of creamy coffee,
and the ellipsis of eyes
simple and round as acorns
