and when I asked them what the problem was
they said they’d get back to me. 
People, in fact, were always saying they’d get back to me. 
It gave me confidence and made me feel good. 
Even if the freeways stopped short of where they had to go, what did I care? 
I wasn’t one of those freeway specialists who got all the money. 
I was just a simple person who was used to walking places. 
If they asked me where the freeway should go, I’d say, “What do I care? 
Let it go up north somewhere. 
Just build the damn thing and get it over with. 
Let the motorists conspire. 
Let the roads become happy with their cares.”

turned his face away from you when he felt that he had to cough.
And count yourself lucky, too, that when he showed you the small pile,
not one person in ten, who was taping my pictures to it,
asked you for the package of sodden ashes that it contained.
Nor for the package of deftly illuminated tiles that was being dropped without comment
into the elegant cubicles on the shoulders of the men by its crest.
